These performances are polished, yet the many solo contributions from each of the players emerge with a strong personality. In this second theme area in F major Schubert finds room for both some happy, spiccato mini-cadences and some brilliant, forte descending scales in octaves. The coda to the exposition is in three sections the last of which is really a codetta to the coda , the sum total of which take up just as much time as the entire exposition-proper did.

Daniel Bartos Trio

Development is simple and straightforward in D. All is as a Classicist would expect it to be in the recapitulation. The opening theme reappears unchanged, the second idea is recast to suit the tonic key, and the same alternation of tonic harmony with a pseudo-Neapolitan chord as outlined by a quarter-note arpeggiation in the cello, to which the violin and viola add the piquant idea of an augmented sixth that closed the exposition is reused to bring the entire movement to a colorful final cadence. They stand on a higher plane than four secondary pieces also included in the set. The B flat and E flat piano trios are among Schubert's best chamber music compositions; they don't can't reach the peaks of his C major string quintet, but then nothing else in chamber music does except Beethoven's late quartets. Robert Schumann praised both works. Of the B flat trio he wrote that it made "the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.

From the first movement's confident opening theme to the finale's outpouring of cheer, the B flat trio offers beguiling rhythms -- just listen to the piano's pearly right hand notes -- and beautifully worked out melodies.

Franz Schubert: String Trio D 471 / Veronika Eberle, Amihai Grosz, Sol Gabetta

In the second movement the cello introduces the lyrical first theme; when the violin joins in, the melody becomes an exquisite duet sung by the strings, accompanied softly by the piano. Such music doesn't play itself.

It takes understanding and perfect ensemble to bring it off, and Beaux Arts Trio typically rises to the occasion. The third movement is a sprightly scherzo; its middle section, an airy waltz that reminds us of Schubert's Viennese bonds.

To cap it all, the finale presents one joyful expression of three wonderful players making music. Beaux Arts Trio's accomplished performance continues in the E flat trio -- an intricate work that's rhythmically vital and rich in melodic material. It's difficult to approximate in words what it's like.

String Trio in B flat major, D. 471

It bears listening to many times, never wearing thin. The first movement combines drama with lyricism. The principal theme of the second movement, one of subtle beauty, is introduced by the sonorous voice of the cello; it provides passages of pure magic, with the piano accompaniment adding to the magic.

There follows a fascinating canonic scherzo movement, before a finale that is almost entirely rhythmic from beginning to end; almost, because twice the sonorous cello comes in intoning the beautiful principal theme of the second movement, a wonderful touch by Schubert that adds unity to the trio. Those who think the last movement is too long may be referring to the original unabridged version. But Schubert himself authorized cutting out two passages, and the result I find not one bit too long.

Indications are that Schubert valued this trio highly.

In , a few months before he died, he arranged a concert in which the E flat trio featured as the main work of the program. By any standard, this is truly master music. This is a wonderful compilation of all of Schubert's trios - two string ones D and D , three piano trios D28, D, D and the famous Notturno D The bright, melodious sound of the Grumiaux trio in the purely string works belies the recording and is fresh and immediate.

The single-movement D is an homage to Mozart and Haydn, whereas the D would not be out of place performed in the historic Cafe Florian in Venice - its three-quarter times are enchanting and almost suggestive of salon music. The Notturno is gentleness itself, the only slight disappointment being the slow tempo chosen by the artists for the middle section I am more used to it being a little more energetic.

All in all, a supoerb acquisition! One person found this helpful. The rest are single movement works which they are worth hearing here. These are master works.

I bought this for one piece and one piece only- but have listened to the entire set many times. Beautiful music as only trios can be. Arthur Grumiaux's artistry on the violin raises this trio to sumblime heights. His phrasing and tone are exquisite and transport the listener to a place out of time. The Beaux Art trio's performance is quite good, but they take second place to the incomparable Grumiaux. See all 26 reviews.
