Everyday chores became insurmountable. I had lost all joy and happiness. I knew I had to find the courage to channel my inner-phoenix and rise triumphantly — or at least, rise to the best of my abilities -- from the ashes of grief. My transformation was not instantaneous by any means. Bit by bit, piece by piece, building block by building block, I began to emerge from the fires of devastation. I devoured books on grief looking for answers and finding others in the same boat which brought a modicum of relief. I asked for help, I got support, and I began to perform spiritual alchemy, to transmute my negatives into positives.
I learned that by writing and helping others, I could emerge from the ashes by doing something meaningful with my life. Surviving was not enough for Laurie. I wanted to transform my pain and find a purpose for living again. What would happen to the man who had let his temper get the best of common sense, with the worst of outcomes?
Was it destiny or would the phoenix rise again? When the Phoenix Rises is the third and final in the Starks Trilogy by Nesly Clerge, and another brilliant, twisted and brutal rendition of the worst man can do to his fellow man; and how sometimes good and evil become a messed-up mixture of emotions, hate and love. For fans of the psychological thriller, this trilogy is one of the best! With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.

Hes the captain of his crew, but are they true. But Stark has to be careful he uses bribes on guards to protect him and on inmate, but can any of them be trusted, would you trust them?
Stark is wary, he is oh so careful. It was tragic for me to read that his son Kane committed a crime only for him to be sent to prison to be near his Father, but someone beat Kane to death with a metal pipe to get back at Stark, who was it. Stark is out for revenge. The trouble is, who did it, who knows who did it, whose brave enough to leak it out. Who does Stark trust, and can he trust even if someone tells him things, could it be lies.
What conspiracy is going on? What is the new war that is breaking out? His appeal has been denied and he's looking at spending 15 years behind bars. To say he is desolate is not even close. His wife is dying from cancer and his 3 children are in dire need of parents.

All the inmates are choosing sides waiting to go to war. Starks has one side and the man who killed Starks' friend by stabbing him to death has the other. And every day only get worse.
Inmates on both sides are being murdered.. Everyone is denying being responsible There is no lack of violence and movement in this book. Most of the characters are brutal, what you would naturally expect behind prison walls. Some you will root for, some you won't, some will be worthy of your compassion, but all will be unforgettable. Opinions expressed here are unsolicited, unbiased and entirely my own. Nov 13, Rebecca McNutt rated it it was amazing Shelves: It's great to see a third installment in this thrilling series, and When the Phoenix Rises , like its predecessors, gives readers a harrowing view of prison life, only this time Frederick has given up.
Upon having his appeal denied, it hits him that the chances of ever being released are looking dismal, and his wife won't be alive much longer. Yet he's not ready to back down without a fight, and this makes for an excellent, powerful and riveting third novel in a very engaging series. On one hand, It's great to see a third installment in this thrilling series, and When the Phoenix Rises , like its predecessors, gives readers a harrowing view of prison life, only this time Frederick has given up.
On one hand, Frederick has been hardened by the life of a convict, and on the other hand he's still every bit the family man he was before his incarceration. This book is a fantastic read and the whole series is one that everybody should pick up. Apr 14, Darinda rated it really liked it. I started to like Starks a little bit in this one. I still don't like the guy, but he finally started to realize not everything was someone else's fault. He made decisions during his life that led to his current situation, and that sunk in a little. This was an entertaining series. The first book had Stark's trial and introduction to prison, and the following two books were about his prison life.

The underlying tension of war in his block which could be started by a look in the wrong direction, the twists and turns, the devastating betrayal of trusts, and the help which comes from a surprising source. All of which his readers know - and welcome - as Nesly Clerge trademark shockers. I physically gasp at these times, apparently Starks is a great multifaceted character, and, of course, prison in general contains all shapes, sizes, orientations and motivations.
Clerge's written talents lie in all aspects - the descriptions of the violence, the human interest, and the emotive side of the characters. Everything feels honest and truthful. The challenge in this final book was to ensure that Starks dealt with as much as he could in his own unique way. Has Clerge been successful? I would say a resounding, "Yes", but you should decide for yourself. I desperately want to see Starks' wish come to fruition.
I'm not ashamed to say that I cried on many occasions whilst reading this as my heart was in my mouth. I felt as though I had been through everything alongside Starks. Fantastic piece of work. Can't wait to read Clerge's next book. Don't hesitate, I highly recommend reading the whole series. You won't regret it. I was given an eARC which I voluntarily read and reviewed. The review is honest and the opinions are all my own.
