English soldiers stole their flocks and herds, burned their crops and villages, and took any food stores they found to drive the highlanders out, and beat into submission any who remained. A village could consider itself lucky if the people were left alive after the Redcoats swept through pillaging, raping, and wantonly destroying anything they could not carry away with them. Into this setting, Captain Garrett Marshall was sent from Fort Augustus with a small troop to occupy the village of Strathherick and find an elusive outlaw who raided British supply trains, stealing back food, and occasionally cattle, to feed the people.
Needless to say, although the locals could not send him packing, nor did they welcome him and his soldiers with open arms. Basing his operations and his Recoats in the manor house of the local laird, just killed at Culloden, Marshall diligently seeks Black Jack by day, and tries not to unnecessarily harass the villagers, but to win their confidence, or at least moderate their hostility, enough to help him in his search.
By night, he tries to woo the laird's daughter, whose home he has commandeered, but finds her understandably unreceptive, and the raids continue, virtually under the very noses of the soldiers. After three weeks, following an unexpected tip, Garrett does indeed capture Black Jack and his gang, but with the raiders come complications. Worse, as they ride back to his base, they find the village in flames, and his general demanding blood. So much for his efforts to treat the people humanely and develop civil, if not friendly, relations between the Scots and the English.
Even that is not the end of his troubles. With his mission officially successfully completed, but his dream in ashes, his heart broken, and his prisoners taken from his custody, he is sent back to Fort Augustus, leaving all the people he has come to know and care for to the tender mercies of a bloodthirsty general who doesn't like his methods, despite his success. What follows is as unlikely in the Georgian court as in desolated post-uprising Scotland, but you must read it for yourself. He still wants to live on friendly terms with the Scots, but can he save his love and her people, and if so, will they ever accept him among them?
Monger can tell you, in her own way. Before I started this book, I did skim some of the reviews to get a general sense of the book. I have taken to doing this before starting a book for a few reasons. The first is to get an idea of what the story is actually about, since summarizations can be off the mark. Another reason is to get an idea of the story as a whole to see if it is something I want to tackle now. The reviews varied on this book but one of the consistent comments was that it was too drawn out.
After finishing the book, I have to agree with that particular sentiment. This book could have been fifty pages or three chapters shorter at the very least. The last few chapters bordered on unnecessary for me. It almost made it seem like the author had to have a set number of pages for the book to have, and added that to fill the gap. A few of these twists, turns, and plot developments felt cheap, almost to the point of pandering.
It took half to almost two-thirds of the book for the marriage that was part of the back cover summary to take place. The book would have been shorter had Garrett been honest about what he had to do to get Maddie out of jail. But for whatever unknown or unexplained reason he did not. This resulted in the book being longer than it needed to be. And then an ending that did up feeling a bit cheesy. I can change my mindset to enjoy most romances based on when written and published.

But that last part was what changed it from a great to a good read. But the last bit felt too drawn out, especially with the chosen plot devices. That hurt the book in the long run, and is likely why a lot of people felt the way did they. The story is still a good one. The only real complaint is the last few chapters, and then the especially cheesy ending. It was still decent but with other books out there I enjoyed more, and feeling there was better from this author, a re-read is not likely. Not even pleasant escapism. When her family home is taken over by a group of English redcoats Madeleine must seek to hide her identity from the handsome English Captain, Garrett Marshall, but she is unprepared for the effect this dashing English soldier will have on her heart. I love adventurous Highland romps, and this had the added advantage of being a free kindle download. Great escapism - handsome hero gets the girl. Works for me every time. I found this to be a better than average historical romance. There was a lot less of that stupid-stuff-that-makes-no-sense-except-to-drag-out-the-book that usually has me gritting my teeth when I read this genre.

The Brigand Bride (Dangerous Masquerade Collection Book 1)
The heroine wasn't mean and obnoxious, as seems to be the recent trend in romantic fiction, the hero was a well-intentioned nice guy, so neither character got on my nerves, so I couldn't help rooting for them to work past their prejudices and not toss away a good thing. The choices and hardships of the people left to fight and survive after the death or desertion by their leaders. The hero, Garrett is truly heroic and the heroine, Maddie is brave, but blinded by her own prejudice. Garrett is blinded by his feelings for her and fails to see what is going on right in front of him, and thus he seems a bit slow.
Honestly, Garrett is so patient and wise that Maddi 3. Honestly, Garrett is so patient and wise that Maddie comes across as a bit of an idiot at one point. Yet, her redemption and reconciliation of our star-crossed lovers makes for a sweet ending. Light romance, was diverting but didn't capture my interest as much as I had hoped. I really enjoyed this! A strong female lead and the author does a great job of immersing the reader in the time period. I also liked that it wasn't easy for the characters. They had to work at it a bit. My main complaint is there are a lot of typos in the kindle edition - it obviously wasn't proofread after conversion.
Thsi was a pretty good book. Though to long at times or not as captivating as it could of been. What happens after Culloden. Fraser clan as been hit hard. The story was as good as an English soldier marries a Scottish heiress. History wise it was good. One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I still relish the story of it until now. It beautifully captures the love and hate relationship between England and Scotland, and between the English and the Scots.

Gym reading, aka free or cheap on Kindle. I rather enjoyed this one. Though, ONCE AGAIN, if the two main characters would have just talked to each other, they could have figured things out much quicker, but who ever expects logic to come into it? This is an okay read. It wasn't the greatest but it also wasn't the absolute worse. I think I distinctly remember reading this book a really long time ago and I liked it.
But since then, I've read other books that had better flow and the characters were more realistic.
