Given that this was a time when people were enforcing law randomly, or not at all, and that it is never clear who are criminals by old laws , and people are good, or not, as they decide, is there really a murder? A killing yes, but without law? Law at this time, in this place, was a little vague, but there were standards of right and wrong within the community.

Why were people so quick to recognize Johannes after all those years gone? Why did no one think of Mergel? Had the A fascinating story. Had they already made up their minds? In the comments here, someone said it was clear to him that Mergel was not the killer. Several people said the ending is unclear. What do you think? Im Sinne von klassisch aber packend. Dann zieht es sich etwas, was bei achtzig Seiten ja auch eine kunst ist. Vielleicht habe ich aber auch nur nicht aufmerksam genug gelesen. Der Schuss sehr nett. Jan 09, Ceasium rated it it was amazing. Jahrhundert, liest es erstaunlich leicht.

Die Judenbuche - German Literature

I really don't know what to think of it. It wasn't bad in a sense, it's just really something I wouldn't normally read, especially because the sentence structure and the way everything was formulated kind of messed with my mind, since it was written a long time ago.

Considering that fact though, it is still a good book with a decent plot. D This is a book I actually had to read for German class because our teacher wants to introduce us to more classic and older German literature. Die Judenbuche is a crime story; however, it focuses a lot on the life of one specific person, the main character called Friedrich Mergel. The plot tied together nicely and made sense, which is always a plus. I understood only some of Friedrich's actions.

The character development kind of and kind of didn't make sense to me.

First Friedrich was a day-dreaming boy, then obedient, then impulsive. It was like a roller coaster ride. I also didn't feel attached to any character at all. I had some issues with the writing style. There were times when I was reading words and just couldn't comprehend them.

I didn't understand what they meant as a sentence and I had to sit down and read the phrase over and over again until I got an idea of what it meant. Otherwise I could understand the plot and the words weren't too old-styled. However, the writer didn't seem to put that much emphasis on making the book descriptive and more captivating. All in all, I can't really judge this book too harshly because it is still a very good book from a long time ago.

We learn about the background of the presumed murderer Friedrich drunk and violent father, pious humiliated mother, cruel village children, isolation, superstition , next his escape in petty criminality and his development of a split personality his shy alter ago Nobody following him like a shadow. It is this life that weighs on Friedrich's consciousness even before he commits murder. Though we are never sure he really was the perpetrator, he himself realizes that he will be found guilty, and flees. Only to live for many years as a slave in Turkey.

But even his years in slavery are not enough to escape his curse: Different from other reviewers I do not think anti-semitism is the or even a major theme here. Sure, the victim is a Jewish usurer and there is some name-calling, but not more than might be expected in any multi-cultural society where the different groups live strictly segregated lives. There is no indication that the Jews were thought much worse than the protestants Dutch among whom Friedrich did not want to stay, not to mention the cruel slave-holding Turks.

A forester who is found dead in the woods with an axe in his head. One reading of the novella is that Friedrich killed him, as they had an unfriendly encounter shortly before and he later appears frightened when confronted with the hatchet, but probably Simon is the murderer, using an old axe of his that Friedrich recognised. The Jew Aaron was a usurer who sold Friedrich the pocket watch which, seemingly, belonged to Franz Ebel first. He sold the watch on credit and had not received payment for some time. He publicly demands payment at a wedding reception, humiliating Friedrich.

Aaron was found slain under a beech three days later, becoming the second murder victim in the story. A local historian, Horst-D. Krus, maintains that Seligman Salomon Archenhold was the victim found murdered by the beech tree. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
