For those who are familiar with the original literature, a condensed version feels light, inadequate, and simplistic. Unfortunately, for a somewhat experienced fan, this is how "White Sox Essential" felt to me. Freedman divides his book into major eras each, roughly, a decade or so , and describes the plight of the team and the major developments during that era. He mixes in quick player profiles of the biggest White Sox stars.
And he sprinkles in various statistical lists and trivia questions. None of this information is complete or definitive, so it leaves one hungering for more. Thus, I would recommend "White Sox Essential" only to those who knowledge of the White Sox is minimal, and who want a quick overview and pointers to other reading material. Kids young fans may also benefit by reading this book. For baseball fans who already know the basic outlines of White Sox history, and who want to get a greater sense of the current state and recent history of the team, especially the World Series, I recommend Richard Roeper's "Sox and the City".

Author Lew Freedman offers 28 brief typically pages chapters that cover various aspects of the history of this venerable but oft-struggling franchise. Readers get a look at the team's orgins, its ballparks, star athletes, the scandal, some near-misses, and of course, the World Champions the team's first in 88 years who held first place all season and swept that year's World Series against the Houston Astros.
Non-Chicagoans who read this may be surprised to learn that it is the White Sox and not the big-money Cubs that are this city's baseball underdogs. This book makes excellent reading but is too short for many hardcore fans - the author could have easily added another dozen chapters. Still, the book is informative easy reading with lots of trips down memory lane.

For example, did you know that former Red Sox catcher Birdie Tebbetts secretly called balls and strikes in a game against the White Sox? Turns out he did it to help out umpire Red Ormsby who had been gassed in WW1 and was suffering from blurred vision. Do you agree with the author's ranking of the 50 greatest players of all time? Should Pedro be ahead of Rocket Roger? Yaz ahead of Ted? Ted's letter to the Veteran's Committee is in this book. Did you know that was a "lemon chicken season" for Wade Boggs? What Red Sox pitcher issued the following statement: What Sox first baseman accused Johnny Damon of "throwing like a girl?
This really is an essential book for Red Sox fans if all ages. My husband and I bought this book for our son's eleventh birthday. He loves baseball and especially the Red Sox. We read the reviews and found nothing objectionable written there.
We paid for gift wrap so therefore didn't have a chance to read the book before his birthday. Luckily, in the excitement of his birthday, the book got laid to the side until we got a chance to preview it. Imagine our shock to find a chapter with the "F" word in the title!! I took a black sharpie to the book thinking surely it must just be a few bad words in this book.
I am only halfway through and have already marked through dozens of words. The book will barely be readable by the time I am through. It will most likely just end up in the trash where it belongs. Do not buy this book for a child or anyone that doesn't care for filthy language! See all 3 reviews.
