The America the Clutters inhabit is safe, predictable, positive — a country where babies are born and grow up and go to high school and get married and live boring, happy, bustling lives. The America that Dick Hickock and Perry Smith live in is a Fallout -style s wasteland where people come and go and live and die with no reason or warning. Cold blooded, check it and see. As it turns out, though, the story is only half about the killers — or, at least, only half about the killers who killed the Clutter family.

The other half of In Cold Blood follows the ordinary people of Holcomb as they try the killers, study them, imprison them, theorize about them, and eventually put them to death with every bit as much steely-eyed abandon as the killers showed the Clutters. One character even directly calls out the judge and executioner for being just as cold-blooded as the murderers. Order and chaos live so close to one another they almost touch, whether we want to admit it or not; and both can be scary as hell. The crime was a psychological accident, virtually an impersonal act; the victims might as well have been killed by lightning.

Root beer for breakfast, Egyptian curses, and heavy-handed dreams about Jesus that are totally not made up for the sake of symbolism. Both books cover murders in isolated areas, but mostly what they share is a vibe — a feeling of cold winds, harsh light, and creepy-crawly things lurking just under the surface. The lifelong friendship, drama, and falling-out between the two great writers over this very book is nearly as good a story as the book itself.
