In the 15 years or so after these celebratory voices became more jingoistic; this was the American century: Concealed by much of this politicking and obfuscated by the vacuousness of many commentators and talking heads has been the action on the ground, as the new kids on the block — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the BRICS — have entered into trade and investment deals across the Global South, the majority world as some will refer to it as.
The one exception to the failure to openly discuss this emerging relationship is a global sense of panic about China, seen as stepping on into old imperial spheres of interest. This is then so much more than a primer, and is better seen as critique of many mainstream discussions of geo-political economics, asserting a model of the world as multi-polar with interweaving flows of sometimes mutually supportive, sometimes counter-veiling policies and practices.
The Rise of the BRICS in Africa : The Geopolitics of South-South Relations
Carmody gives us clear insight to the patterns of foreign investment and structures of economic development in sub-Saharan Africa, and in doing so challenges us to think in exciting new ways about global geo-politics and about related economic relations, to get beyond the imperialist and 20th century outlook that puts all the power and agency in the North Atlantic zone, and to consider a much more sophisticated and nuanced sense of a network of relations between states and economic forces in the Global South.
Well worth a look. Interesting book with some good insights, but annoying in parts. The author says in the chapter on South Africa that he will refer to the country as "SA" in the chapter but then refers to the country sometimes as "South Africa". I found myself saying, "pick one and stick to it" - the author uses old examples such as a source that talks about Brazil seeking out new sources of natural gas, such as from Nigeria. While that was the Interesting book with some good insights, but annoying in parts.
While that was the case in , the world has moved on since then. So what is the current state of play in when the book was published?

It would have been interesting if the author had updated his examples to give the current state of play - the author cites the authors of one book "Talk Left, Walk Right" as being Patrick Bond and Zapiro. Zapiro is a cartoonist who provided some of the cartoons used in the book; he wasn't one of the authors of the book. We have no references for this item.
