But right before summer vacation starts he finds an albino girl trapped in a shed behind a local house. After Red frees her, the world he knew quickly unravels into something more mysterious—an unsteady reality where a man with silver teeth and buzz saw voice points him toward the true meaning of sacrifice. With his friendship tested, he fights for life to be as it once was, but he finds out that things can never be the same once the strange girl wakes.

I do understand that this antagonist serves as that external menace terrorizing our main character, however, other than a deep deep sense of loneliness, I don't fully understand its motivation.

One thing I did distill from its actions was the strong motive of vengeance. Does this mean that the Lizard King was its own entity or was it vengeance incarnate on behalf of the Jeremy Character? Whatever the case was, it certainly was frightening. If this novella is a piece to a larger mythos, then we'll simply have to be patient to see how this world unfolds and what role the Lizard King will play and what other divine and infernal agencies will battle things out in Thompson's world. Again, much like his earlier novel, the characterization is outstanding, and we get a nice gritty portrait of some very flawed human beings.

I'm eager to find out more about this strange world in the next installment Aug 19, K. Wood rated it really liked it. I've been lucky enough to witness Lee Thompson grow as a writer. I've read a lot of his short fiction, from the not so good to the excellent, so it's a no-brainer that I'm sticking with this cat.

He's got the chops and delivers them yet again with Iron Butterflies Rust. This is a tale written close to home, I think, one of love, hate, failure and redemption, and the richness—the realness —of it all shines through even the darkest moments of the story. And it's plenty dark. There were a couple part I've been lucky enough to witness Lee Thompson grow as a writer.

There were a couple parts in the beginning that lined up too conveniently for me, and Frank Gunn can be a bastard of a character to sympathize with at times, but overall Iron Butterflies Rust is a fantastic and heartbreaking little tale. As with Ollie's Into Hell , this is part of the Delirium Books novella series, thus equally as limited in quantity.

Hopefully this and future Frank Gunn tales there are more coming will be released together in a more widely available format at some point. For now, though, pay attention to Lee Thompson.

If you aren't reading the work of Lee Thompson, you should be When Frank Gunn's wife pulls his pistol from his waistband at a local carnival, trying to protect an eight-year-old boy named Jeremy Chambers from his seemingly crazy pistol-wielding father, the whole situation turns bad. As Frank tries to pull his life together, to make sense of the tragedy, he is haunted by persistent waking nightmares that bleed into his reality, all of which lead to a shocking conclusing you won't soon forget. While typically categorized as a "horror writer," Thompson is much more than that, and "Iron Butterflies Rust" is an amalgam of fantasy, crime thriller, literary horror, and at its heart, a love story. It serves as a stark reminder of how quickly lives, relationships, and people can change, even those we love the most.

And how the road to hell really is paved with good intentions.
