Many professing Christian churches have pushed Scripture to the back burner, into irrelevance, taking an a la carte spiritual meal from it as if they have the authority to choose which doctrines to swallow and which to refuse. If the true church is to do a work for God, it must be established and built on God's Word rather than on tradition.

Water as Salvation or Eternal Life

Collins The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Healing a Leper Part Three. But the cleansing found here in Ephesians 5: There are some things that must be purged in another way.

The word "water" here is symbolic, referring to the Word of God , as well as to the Holy Spirit. Christ gave a long discourse in John 6, which we often apply at Passover time, about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. Towards the end, He says to his audience, "The words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life" John 6: We have in the Bible the Word of God—and Jesus says it contains power. Words are merely symbols of ideas that we use to reason. Ephesians 5 reveals that we need the water in the word. The word here does not denote a lengthy discourse or the words printed in the Bible.

The word here is the instant word, the present word, the word today. Two different Greek words are used in the New Testament for word: After we read it, however, it becomes the instant word to us.

Many times the Lord also speaks an instant word directly within us. Actually, it is not necessarily so, because the Lord who is in us is living, and He speaks to us. In principle, of course, the words which the Lord speaks to us within will never contradict His constant words in the Bible. However, in detail, numerous words that the Lord speaks to us throughout our whole life are not found in the Bible.

This is the instant word spoken of here in Ephesians 5. The water here is not for supplying but for cleansing, that is, for the cleansing and washing of the church. What is washed away is not defilements or sins, but spots and wrinkles.

The Washing of the Word

Wrinkles are related to oldness. You must let the water in the word, that is, the spirit and the life in the word, do a metabolic work in your organic being by adding new life elements into you to replace the old elements. The effect in us is the conviction of sins; and when faith rests on the testimony of the Spirit to the value of the blood of Christ that cleanseth from all sin, He the Spirit can take up His dwelling-place in us to be the power of the enjoyment of all that we have been brought into by the water and the blood: But fastening our attention on the water, it is important to see that there is a double application of what it represents as in John The Word applied by the Spirit to our souls carries with it the sentence of death upon all that is of the flesh.

God could do nothing with it but end it in judgment Gen. It is, on the one hand, the end of the flesh in total condemnation, and on the other, the introduction of a life in which we can live to God and enjoy Him for ever. But we have to pass with this life through a defiling world, where all that meets the senses tends to hinder communion with Him who is our life. Hence the need of the second application of the Word, symbolised by the Lord's touching service to His disciples.
