However, a desire for justice is another human instinct, one that I hoped would always devour the selfish desire to preserve the self. No, I could not walk the easy path. I would have to do what I could for this poor woman. Facing pressure and resistance at every turn—and in one instance, mortal danger herself—Florence forges ahead using the gifts that made her a pioneer in the field of nursing to unmask a murderer.
No Cure for the Dead is both a fascinating and convincing portrait of the famed historical figure that seamlessly incorporates a murder mystery into the known biography. I also really enjoyed all the period detail, from the rather terrifying state of best medical practices to the pervasive social opinions of nursing itself.
These last are beautifully illustrated when a middle-class matron deigns to lower herself to the profession upon the death of her bedridden husband. Gilbert shows up at the Establishment and protests after Florence works to disabuse her of her notions:. I clasped my hands together in front of me. I have plans to train up women to become not just caretakers of the ill but healers of them. I went back to the door and swung it open wide.

Caustic and upright but not without humor or sympathy, Florence is a force to be reckoned with as she applies her keen mind to solving a murder in the course of successfully running a hospital in an age that had little faith in her methods or her person. Your email address will not be published. She is the spitting image of his college girlfriend, Marissa Minor, who died in a campus house fire 20 years earlier. But when Nick tries to speak to her, she acts skittish and rushes off.
The next morning the police arrive at Nick's house and show him a photo of the woman from the store.
She's been found dead. What if you found a way to send something back in time? But not weeks, days, or even minutes back. What if you could only send something back a fraction of a second? Would this be of any use? You wouldn't have nearly enough time to right a wrong, change an event, or win a lottery. Nathan Wexler is a brilliant physicist who thinks he's found a way to send matter a split second back into the past.
But before he can even confirm his findings, he and his wife-to-be, Jenna Morrison, find themselves in a battle for their very lives. Sam begs to end his life, but Julie sees hope in a life together.

Detective Max Rupert's and attorney Boady Sanden's friendship is being pushed to the breaking point. Max is convinced that Jennavieve Pruitt was killed by her husband, Ben. Jalen Jordan retained Street for what seemed to be a minor traffic violation, but when evidence turned up linking Jordan to the death of two boys, Street wanted out of the case. Death at Brier Hospital is routine and provides the perfect opportunity to murder and get away with it. Jacob Weizman, a physician, and his wife, Lola, a psychotherapist, are Holocaust survivors and need no proof of evil in this world. Jacob and Lola are unique protagonists. They're octogenarians who take the fear out of getting old.
Their intelligence, competence, humor, and sense of history make them appealing in a world that too often disdains the aged.
No Cure for Murder
After 55 years practicing medicine, Jacob is disappointed, but not surprised by several patients' deaths, even the unexpected ones. Soon, however, it becomes clear that a killer is stalking the halls of Brier Hospital targeting Jacob's patients. While Jacob has made enemies over the years, he finds it inconceivable that anyone would murder his patients for revenge.
The killings mount even as the hospital and police increase security and pursue a vigorous investigation. Finally, unsatisfied with surrogates, the killer targets Jacob. The first book by this author was poorly written, and the narration was terrible. This book has more substance, and I was relieved that it wasn't the same narrator. There were some times when this narrator's voice was overdone particularly with the "old man" doctor , but overall it was OK.
The story was interesting and kept my attention.
The editing was apparently not the best But, it was an interesting topic when you got down to the revelation of who was doing the murders and why. I will watch for more from this author to see how he progresses. Great story with interesting characters that captured my attention.
