Ma said she would have to think about it and walked out. The nurses said they had to pry the photo from him because rigor mortis had set in. It took them five minutes to remove the photo from his hand. Ma cried and cried.

I always had a smile on my face. I smiled so much that I got the nickname Smiley. Every day is dark and forlorn. Every day feels like a drab funeral. Every day I want to cry, fight, pray, and curse God.

I was in the middle of watching Bishop T. Jakes, the preacher from Dallas when I heard the knock on my door. I was playing one of his DVDs. I had made a five dollar donation to T. Lord, please help me. Please strengthen me and bring joy back into my life.
Short Story: The Midnight Knock by Mary B. Banks
Ma would have probably rolled over in her grave to know I had given money to a TV preacher. A Black one at that. Even though Ma had married my father, she could be a bigot at times. I guess it runs through the genes. What hits the ground is yours. But at the end, it seemed like she knew she was going to go.
She had begun to read the Bible and quote scriptures. I thought that Ma was going through a midlife crisis. I never ever saw Ma open a Bible, let alone quote a scripture in my entire life. She even stopped cursing and smoking and drinking her gin and her gossiping and having her occasional one night stands. I guess it should have been a sign when she gave Pastor Edwards one hundred dollars when she went to church with me.
Ma was a sight. She wore white lace gloves and an embroidered prayer cap apparently, it was now sinful for women to go to church without their hair covered. The cross that hung around her neck was huge. Her skirt swept the floor of the church like curtain drapes. When I saw her slip the Benjamin Franklin in her tithe envelope, I nearly fell out. Ma would reprimand me for putting three dollars in the collection plate, and here she was giving away one hundred dollars! I barely noticed the knock at first. I thought it was the wind, but then it grew louder and faster. I looked through the peephole, and to my surprise, it was a little girl.
A Black little girl. Her frilly, pink shirt was torn. She looked like hell. One shoe on, one shoe off. I took the little girl in and asked if she were cold. Her brown eyes pierced straight through me like a butcher knife. She said she had been in a car crash. Both her parents had died, even her baby sister, who was only a month-old.

She said it calmly. The same way she had said she was eight-years-old. Her calmness frightened me. I bit my lower lip, which is something I do when I get nervous. I offered her hot chocolate. However, they find it nearly impossible to discover what is going on, because they are being pursued non-stop by both the police and the beast-humans. Because of a letter sent to the FBI by a resident of Moonlight Cove- Harry Talbot- offering information about the deadly events in town, Sam knows that he must find Talbot. Harry is a Vietnam vet, who was terribly injured during the war, and now uses a wheelchair.
He has not yet been converted into one of the beasts. Because he spends most of his time watching the people of Moonlight Cove- through his telescopes- Harry has learned what is going on in town and also learns that Thomas Shaddack and the local police are behind it all. Regardless of numerous attempts to kill them, Sam and Tessa learn the full story behind the secret of Moonlight Cove. Thomas Shaddack had created a means whereby a person can be converted into a super-human no longer susceptible to illness, injury, fatigue, or emotion. But the conversion has an unforeseen side-effect.
From their super-human form, many of the people begin to regress into the deadly human-beasts that are prowling around the town. These creatures exist for no other reason than to kill others and to stay alive, themselves. In the end, Shaddack descends into complete madness, his plan goes terribly wrong, most of the townspeople revert into super-creatures, and death fills the streets and homes of Moonlight Cove. The town has literally become a place of 'kill or be killed'. Seeing that nothing can stop the town's descent into chaos, the Chief of Police, Loman Watkins, vows to kill Shaddack, which will automatically and simultaneously kill every converted person in the community.
As part of each 'conversion' Shaddack has placed a microchip inside each person that will kill them should Shaddack's heart stop i. The novel concludes quickly and very dynamically. Shaddack is killed, most of the town dies, Sam, Tessa, and Chrissie survive and the FBI is sent in to clean up the mess. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Pastor and His Son
Writes Digest Books, , p. Last Sunday, being a particularly cold and rainy day, it was even more so in my heart that I came to the end of the line where I no longer had any hope or will to live. So I took a rope and a chair and ascended the stairway into the attic of my home I fastened the rope securely to a rafter in the roof, then stood on the chair and fastened the other end of the rope around my neck. Standing on that chair, so lonely and brokenhearted I was about to leap off, when suddenly the loud ringing of my doorbell downstairs startled me.
I thought, "I'll wait a minute, and whoever it is will go away..
I waited and waited, but the ringing doorbell seemed to get louder and more insistent, and then the person ringing also started knocking loudly. I thought to myself again, "Who on earth could this be? Nobody ever rings my bell or comes to see me. When I opened the door and looked I could hardly believe my eyes, for there on my front porch was the most radiant and angelic little boy I had ever seen in my life.

Then he gave me this Gospel Tract that I now hold in my hand. As the little angel disappeared back out into the cold and rain, I closed my door and read slowly every word of this Gospel Tract. Then I went up to my attic to get my rope and chair. I wouldn't be needing them any more. Since the address of your church was on the back of this Gospel Tract, I have come here to personally say THANK YOU to God's little angel who came just in the nick of time and by so doing, spared my soul from an eternity in hell.
There was not a dry eye in the church. And as shouts of praise and honor to THE KING resounded off the very rafters of the building, Pastor Dad descended from the pulpit to the front pew where the little angel was seated. He took his son in his arms and sobbed uncontrollably.
